Residency: L’Appartamento Napoli

Works here were completed at L’Appartamento Napoli in Naples, Italy during the month of March 2020. Roughly 80 works were made in total then through a process of photo and real-life references in either acrylic, watercolor, or gouache paint.

In addition, a painting project completed during that time was 36+ plein-air gouache series entitled “36 Views from the Balcony,” which can be viewed below in its electronic formatting.

This piece was thought up as a way to manage the strict at-home policy in Italy during that time, of which often included both a social norm and governmental ordinance of only going outside for necessities. As a nod to Hokusai’s 36 Views of Mount Fuji (a body of artwork displaying locations all across Japan featuring the famous Mount Fuji), 36 Views from the Balcony was a challenge to create 36 different paintings from the same 200 square foot area. This series was conceived out of a determination to paint the city of Naples from life, while also assimilating to the cultural unity (including balcony sing-alongs) and greater collective understanding of a desire for safety in a world in unrest.
